I wonder why we sometimes think that the bigger the package the greater the surprise. When I was young and it was Christmastime I would always look under the tree for the biggest package. I would pick it up a hundred times and shake it and listen to hear if it rattled or anything. Then on Christmas morning that would be the first package that I would unwrap. And, actually, I have not changed very much...I still look for the biggest package.
But I have since learned that the biggest package does not always hold the greatest prize. To me it is that way in the service to the Lord. It is not always the "bigger" goals or gifts that mean the most. Sometimes it is the smallest of gifts that can mean much as we go about the business of the Kingdom.
I asked our chapel group several weeks back to help in the ministry of a friend of mine. WWW.ComfortSocksOnline.org is committed to providing a clean, warm pair of socks for someone who is homeless. Ocean Aire Chapel took the challenge of donating 300 pair of socks to give to Comfort Socks. At the time it seemed like a big challenge for our small group. But never underestimate God. We wanted to collect the goal by Sunday, September 6. When we reached 150 pair a couple of weeks ago, I thought that we might not reach the goal. What did I know? There are two Sundays left but today at the end of our service we had collected a total of 308 pair...with more coming. Praise the Lord!
You would think after 40 years of ministry that I would long ago have learned that with God all things are possible. I know it...I just need to remember it. Remember, the biggest victories do not always come in the biggest packages. They sometimes come in a package as small as a pair of socks.
